Crit 01.10.10

First crit back from the summer holidays, after showing my contact sheets of Rob, Peng and Amelia as well as my inspiration from Dean Rogers and various films, it was suggested that I research into cinema and music in a little more detail to help me along with my project, as well as researching how controlled my photographs will have to be in terms of lighting and set up.

So, more photo analysis and research up next.

The candid quality works really well here although the image is posed. The strong use of black and white and contrast is something I would like to recreate. The styling and location is something that is readily available in Norwich therefore will make my images look authentic. The images are taken on a 35mm slr, so it would be useful to use my OM-1 or my canon AE-1 with ilford black and white film and process this in the darkroom.

Dean Rogers Biography

Dean Rogers

Based in the UK and having over 10 years experience in film, Dean works closely with some of films most talented Directors today including Shane Meadows and Anton Corbjin. Unlike conventional ‘film’ photographers, who shoot directly from the cameras perspective, Dean instead works to find his own composition to capture the feel and atmosphere of a film.

This style has been transferred now to his stills work - including his first shoot for Paul Smith for a/w 08, creating the lighting, feel and framing of a film to produce a fashion shoot.

Dean has also directed and created films for both Paul Smith, and SHOW Studio. Other clients include T Mobile, 4 Creative, and Swarovski.

Blunt represents Dean Rogers Worldwide.

As I love both directors Rogers has shot with I feel a personal bond with his photographs. I love the reminiscent quality of his work and the links to the past.

Self Portrait by Rachel Aust
I haven’t really done a lot of high contrast work before, so it may be something I would like to try to challenge my style. It’s also been a very long time since I took any self portrait. This image focuses more on the models facial expression rather than anything else which is something I need to improve on.

I love the use of available light in this image as my location is likely to be wooded area the dappled light will transfer over beautifully. The use of props and art within art interests me and the concept of this shoot is one that draws its audience in as it’s theme is unusual and quirky.

I love surreal and dream-like portraits. One of my favourite concepts for portraits or photography in general is taking objects that belong outside inside and objects that belong outside inside creating a surreal set up as a backdrop to my images. I again would like to use a similar use of muted tones.

I adore Beljakova’s use of props in this instance, I love the use of frames inside frames so I would like to do something similar with my images. I also adore the colour quality of the image making a dreamlike and surreal atmosphere.

I adore Chiang’s use of colour in this image. The whole mood is very nostalgic and dreamlike, my own image will communicate the personality of my model into it as well as sharing the atmosphere by using a similar sense of tone and colour.

Now I have researched and chosen what I want to do for my landscape project I now feel ready to start researching into my Portraiture project. I will take my landscape photographs during the coming week so it will be beneficial for my time management skills to start to research my other projects starting with my Portraiture project.
